MODULAR ORIGAMI IN ARGENTINA

Diagrams & Instructions

Laura Azcoaga - MAIL

             El sitio en Español

I'm working to complete the English version as soon as possible. A little patience, please.

You might want to take a look at the Spanish site, though, it'll give you a pretty good idea of what this is going to be.

I have included here a number of diagrams of my own, and many links to those of others'. In some cases, I have added only notes that somehow express my own experience with them and I thought might be of use.

DIAGRAMS & instructions

TRIANGULAR MODULES

They share a number of features::

  • All of them need a 60º fold somewhere in the folding sequence

  • Most can be used to build stellated polyhedra

  • Several of them work on double parity (or left-right symmetry)

  • In many cases you can replace oor exchange them to build similar pieces

  TSU - THE SIMPLE UNIT

Created by Chuck Esseltine, it may be found in  http://www.anniefolds.com/diagrams.htm

Typical for the "cap" on the points. And it doesn't seem so simple to me, actually, but the models worked on double sided paper present an interesting strip pattern.

  TRI-MODULe

Created by Nick Robinson (link to the diagram), it is used in all types of stellated models and others. Check Michal Kosmulski's  beautiful pieces. He has built a Sierpinski fractal triangle/tetrahedron with it. And also a version of Koch's snowflake (another fractal)

  EQUILATERAL TRIANGLE

I learned it from Bennet Arnstein's (3D Geometric Origami) and in this page are my instructions with photos (also in English). It's very simple and has the same properties as other more complex modules (like the Double-Pocket Equilateral Triangle by Tomoko Fusè, with 20- step instructions!) and as you can see in the photos, it's most decorative.

A word of warning: stellated polyhedra with spikes of 5 or more sides need glueing (the radius is too wide and the points tend to open), but in the 3 or 4-side spikes no glue is required.

  MM Simple Isosceles UNIT

Another triangular module to build mostly stellated models.

  OXIMoDULe

An interesting variation of the PHIzz module created by Michal Kosmulski. His website contains instructions to fold and assemble several models.

Cubo con oxi módulo

  MÓDULO DE BASES

Created by Lewis Simon, though it's considered generally a  'classic'. I learned ir from a Russian Kusudama book. My instructions are here. It's a vertex modules and with it you can make stars and polyhedra of 4 vertex (cubeoctahedron and rhombicuboctahedron), though I found a way to make a cube.

  UNIDAD PENTAGONAL

Created by Helena Verrill (www.math.lsu.edu/~verrill/origami) makes for a very elegant dodecahedron. Her page has very good folding instructions.

  KANTENMODUL

Created by Carmen Sprung. It is an edge module with great possibilities and the diagram is in http://www.origamiseiten.de/diagrams/kmodul02.pdf.

Octaedro con Kantenmodul creado por maSao

Don Albert has photos of many polyhedra built with it..

  RAPIDO

Don Albert (http://don.albert.free.fr/)  has some very interesting modules which he calls "rapido". The instructions are just a few not very clear photos.

  CURLERS

  COMPOUND MODULE (t. fUSE)

I learned it from a photocopy of a book in Japanese... This unit has grest potential and I haven`t finished exploring its possibilities. The diagram, in a printer friendly version,  is here and the photos of the models and bilingual assembly instructions are  in this page

12 module cuboctahedron. It flattens when twisted and becomes a pocket polyhedron... 30-unit Icosaedron or Star dodecahedron. 30-unit PENTAKIS. When opened, the module takes a romboid shape similar to the 2-sonobe points used generally to build the pentakis dodecahedron.

PLANARS oR INTERSECTING PLANES

All these models are built with the structure of the axis XYZ intersecting at a central point. They are classified according to the number of axes (or planes) they have.

POLIEDROS ESTRELLADOS O STELLADOS
